What makes a port city a PORT city? Is it merely a city that also happens to have a port? This website explores the Asian port city, past and present…
‘Brides of the Sea’, ‘Gateways to Asia’ and ‘the transformers of Asia’ are some of the ways Asian port cities have been described. Port cities hold a very special interest for many maritime enthusiasts because they bridge the land and the sea. This ‘littoral’ city will often be distinctly maritime and yet cosmopolitan, global and yet local. And in the present day, many of the great port cities (of the early modern and colonial eras) are enjoying a renaissance through reviving their port city heyday.
This site is dedicated to exploring the history of many of Asia’s port cities. It’s a ‘work in progress’ so please visit again to see what’s new!
